Documentary Captures Roanoke’s Unique Place in Advertising History

Film Premiere September 20th Grandin TheatreDirector / Writers: Dave Perry & Todd Marcum

Shine: The Legacy of Roanoke’s Advertising Men and Women

They spent their lives telling stories. Now they’re telling their own.

ROANOKE, Va. (August 28, 2017) – As the Roanoke Region developed, a talented group of communicators grew with it. Through advertisements, they told the stories of our railroads, retailers, health care providers and nonprofit organizations. From “I am the Nation,” an ad created at the venerable Houck Advertising Agency that became a recording by Johnny Cash, to the accidental icon of the Mill Mountain Star, Shine: The Legacy of Roanoke’s Advertising Men and Women offers perspectives on creativity, change, and the transformative power of ideas.

A labor of love, creators Todd Marcum and filmmaker Dave Perry spent four years capturing interviews with Roanoke’s iconic advertising professionals. “Roanoke has a unique place in advertising lore and we wanted to save that story,” Marcum said. “Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to build relationships with Roanoke’s advertising greats. I’ve heard the stories and the unique accomplishments, and wanted to share those with the region before they were lost.”

The film features a host of archival commercials, as well as a personality filled cast of Roanoke advertising characters that includes more than 40 men and women sharing stories from an industry that helped shape the city we know today.

“In 2013, Todd asked me if I would be interested in helping with a project he had in mind,” said Dave Perry, Director of Photography. “Dozens of interviews, hundreds of hours, and four years later, we now have the most complete archive of the region’s advertising stories showcasing the influence it had, and still has, on modern culture.”

Produced in association with the Roanoke Chapter of the American Advertising Federation and filmed over the course of four years, the documentary benefitted from the assistance of dozens of reviewers and content providers.
